The Import Wizard is a separate utility that allows you to import data into the Medical Record Retention System.  Once you have imported your initial data, you can use the Import Wizard to import your on-going data.  The wizard can be automated using command line parameters.

The import wizard will guide you through a series of pages, allowing you to describe the data that the wizard will read to import.  You can import both delimited and fixed length files.  For delimited files choose from comma, tab, pipe, or other delimiters as well as selecting any text qualifiers.  There is a step that allows you to map the columns of data in the source file to the appropriate MRRS database columns. 

You can describe the format of dates in your source file so that they are properly interpreted during the import.  The import wizard can also import patient names from either a single column or multiple columns (e.g. Last, First, Middle).  If the patient name is stored in a single column in the source file, you will describe how to split the name into individual fields using a predefined set of choices.

After you define the source data, you can save the definition for use at a later time or for your automated jobs.

Most hospitals will want to import their entire Master Patient Index initially and continue importing changes from the Master Patient Index on a regular basis.  The import wizard has everything you need to accomplish both task. 

Note:  An added benefit to using your Master Patient Index as your source data is that you will have a working back up copy of your MPI in the event your mainframe system is down temporarily.
